Ministery of Social Justice & Empowerment and Union Ministery for
Communication and Information Technology as part of his 125th Birth

125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambekdar :-
- The objective of year long celebrations is to make the world aware about the life and the work of Dr. Babasaheb Ambekdar as a champion of the underprivileged.
- The Prime Minister chaired the first meeting of the National Committee on Nationwide Celebration of 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the 23rd July 2015.
- Government has taken up a number of programmes and is organizing various activities on the 125th Birth Anniversary celebrations
- The village Ambadve in Ratnagiri District (Maharashtra), to which the parents of Dr. Ambedkar belonged will be developed as a Model Village under PMAGY Scheme (Adarsh Gram)
Facts to know about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar:-
- Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar popularly known as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was Independent India's first law minister and the principal architect of the Constitution of India
- Babasaheb belonged to the Hindu Mahar caste, who were treated as untouchables and subjected to intense socio-economic discrimination.
- His native village name was "Ambavade" in Ratnagiri District so he changed his name from "Sakpal" to "Ambedkar".
- In 1907, Babasaheb passed his matriculation examination and entered the University of Bombay, becoming one of the first persons of untouchable origin to enter a college in India.
- Ambedkar was a prolific student, earning a law degree and various doctorates from Columbia University and the London School of Economics.
- Babasaheb, was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer. In his early career he was an economist, professor, and lawyer.
- In 1936, Ambedkar founded the Independent Labour Party, which contested the 1937 Bombay election to the Central Legislative Assembly.
- In 1990, the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, was posthumously conferred upon Ambedkar
Religious Views of
Babasaheb :- Babasaheb inspired the
Modern Buddhist Movement and campaigned against social discrimination against
Untouchables (Dalits). In 1956 he converted to Buddhism, initiating mass
conversions of Dalits.
