Harshavardhan Neotia elected as President of FICCI

Harshavardhan Neotia, Chairman of Ambuja Neotia group, has been elected president of industry body Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) for 2016. Neotia, a 'Padma Shri' awardee, is also a member of the Rajasthan Chief Minister's Advisory Council and West Bengal Chief Minister's Core Committee on Industry.He will succeed incumbent FICCI President Jyotsna Suri during the chamber’s AGM in December 2015. Turkey issues special stamp featuring PM Narendra Modi

A personalised postage stamp featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi was issued by Turkey in remembrance of the just concluded G20 Leaders Summit. The stamp of 2.80 Turkish lira bears a picture of Modi and the Indian national flag. It has 'Narendra Modi - Prime Minister of Republic of India' written at the bottom. Personalised stamps of G20 Turkey Summit Leaders were presented by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in remembrance of G20 Turkey Leaders Summit. In all, 33 stamps including of the leaders of the 19 biggest and most powerful economies of the world and the European Union were issued.
Other world leaders featured include US President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, UK Prime Minister David Cameroon, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Brazilian President Dilma Roussef, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Sinzo Abe and European Council President Donald Tusk. UNHCR to get 2015 Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace


    The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2015 will be awarded to the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

  1. The decision was taken by the international jury of the prize, headed by Vice President Hamid Ansari.
  2. Why UNHRC?
    The prestigious award is being given to the office of UNHCR in recognition of its immense contributions in assisting millions of refugees and for working under difficult circumstances to bring about changes to reduce the flow of refugees.

The prize is accorded annually to individuals or organisations in recognition of creative efforts toward promoting international peace, development and a new international economic order, ensuring that scientific discoveries are used for the larger good of humanity, and enlarging the scope of freedom.
  4. The prize carries a cash award of Rs.25 lakhs and a citation.
  5. It was first awarded in 1986.
  6. UNHCR:
  7. The UN General Assembly established the UNHCR on 14 December, 1950, initially to help people displaced by the World War II.
  8. In the decades that followed, it became the principal agency that has helped displaced people throughout the world.
  9. UNHCR’S mission is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees and seek lasting solutions to their plight.

Aditya mission

    Isro chairman A S Kiran Kumar recently said that India’s first solar mission, Aditya-1, is slated for lift-off in 2018-2019. He said that the spacecraft will be positioned 1.5 million kms from the earth at a point called Lagranian-1 and will make a detailed study of the sun 24×7.

    About Aditya-1:

        The following six proposals have been short-listed for the mission:

  1.         Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC), IIA, Bengaluru

  2.         Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT), IUCAA, Pune

  3.         Plasma Analyser Package for Aditya (PAPA), SPL/VSSC, Trivandrum

  4.         Aditya Solar wind Particle Experiment (ASPEX), PRL, Ahmedabad

  5.         Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer (SoLEXS), SAG/ISAC, Bengaluru

  6.         High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer (HEL1OS), SAG/ISAC, Bengaluru

  7.    
  8. It is India’s first solar mission. It will study the sun’s outer most layers, the corona and the chromospheres and collect data about coronal mass ejection, which will also yield information for space weather prediction.
  9. The project costs approximately Rs 400 crores and is a joint venture between ISRO and physicists from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru; Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune; Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, and other institutes.
  10. The data from Aditya mission will be immensely helpful in discriminating between different models for the origin of solar storms and also for constraining how the storms evolve and what path they take through the interplanetary space from the Sun to the Earth

Mega food park in Telangana


    Union Minister of Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal recently laid the foundation stone of the first Mega Food Park in Telangana.

  1. The park is promoted by Smart Agro Food Park Pvt. Ltd. at Village Lakkampally and Chimrajpally in Telangana.
  2. This is the first Mega Food Park in Telangana and will be set up with the project cost of Rs. 108.95 crore in an area of 78 acres.
  3. The Mega Food Park will have strong backward linkage and three Primary Processing Centres (PPCs) will be set up at Medchal, Medak and Nalgonda.
  4. The Park is expected to provide direct and indirect employment to about 6000 people and benefit about 30,000 farmers in its catchment area.
  5. Ministry of Food Processing Industries has sanctioned two more Mega Food Parks to be set up in Khammam & Mahboobnagar districts in the State.

  6. Mega Food Parks Scheme:
    The Scheme of Mega Food Park aims at providing a mechanism to link agricultural production to the market by bringing together farmers, processors and retailers so as to ensure maximizing value addition, minimizing wastages, increasing farmers’ income and creating employment opportunities particularly in rural sector.
    Aim of the Scheme: The Scheme is aimed at providing modern infrastructure facilities along the value chain from farm gate to the market with strong backward and forward linkages.

  7. They facilitate the efforts to increase the level of processing of agricultural and horticultural produce, with particular focus on perishables, in the country and thereby to check the wastage.
  8. The Scheme has a cluster based approach based on a hub and spokes model. It includes creation of infrastructure for primary processing and storage near the farm in the form of Primary Processing Centres (PPCs) and Collection Centres (CCs) and common facilities and enabling infrastructure at Central Processing Centre (CPC).
  9. The PPCs are meant for functioning as a link between the producers and processors for supply of raw material to the Central Processing Centres.
  10. CPC has need based core processing facilities and basic enabling infrastructure to be used by the food processing units setup at the CPC. The minimum area required for a CPC is 50 acres.
  11. The scheme is demand-driven and would facilitate food processing units to meet environmental, safety and social standards.

  12. Implementation and financial assistance:
  13. Mega Food Park project is implemented by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) which is a Body Corporate registered under the Companies Act. State Government/State Government entities/Cooperatives applying for setting up a project under the scheme are not required to form a separate SPV.
  14. The financial assistance for Mega Food Park is provided in the form of grant-in-aid at 50% of eligible project cost in general areas and at 75% of eligible project cost in NE Region and difficult areas (Hilly States and ITDP areas) subject to maximum of Rs. 50 crore per project.

  15. What benefits these food parks provide?
  16. Reducing post harvest losses.
  17. Maintainance of the supply chain in sustainable manner.
  18. Additional income generation for the farmers.
  19. Shifting the farmers to more market driven and profitable farming activities.
  20. It will be a one stop shop where everything will be available at a single location.
  21. As per experts, it will directly employ 10,000 people.
  22. This integrated food park will help reduce supply chain costs.
  23. It will also reduce wastage across the food value chain in India and improve quality and hygiene to create food products in the country.


Doyang lake


    The Centre has decided to develop the Doyang lake in Nagaland as an eco-tourism spot for bird-watchers.

  1. The lake is famous as a roosting site for longest travelling raptors Amur Falcons.
  2. Amur falcons are the longest travelling raptors in the world and come to Doyang every year in millions.
  3. Amur falcons, weigh just 150 grams and cover 5,600 kms, flying non-stop in five days from Mongolia to arrive in Nagaland.

  4. Until recently, Naga tribesmen used to hunt thousands of Amur falcons for meat. But last year, after a vigorous campaign by wildlife activists, they pledged to protect the bird and since then, not a single bird has been hunted in the area.

Sundar Pichai to spearhead Google


Google has formed a new parent company dubbed Alphabet that will include the Internet search unit as one of several entities. Alphabet will be run by Google chief Larry Page. And Indian born Sundar Pichai will be the new CEO, Google.


  • Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies, the largest of which is Google.
  • Alphabet will include units focusing on life sciences such as a glucose-sensing contact lens and the health research firm Calico.
  • Alphabet Inc. will replace Google Inc. as the publicly traded entity, and all shares of Google will automatically convert to shares of Alphabet, with all of the same rights.
  • Google will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alphabet. The Google unit will include search and search ads, maps, apps, YouTube, Android and related technical infrastructure, according to a regulatory filing.

  • In his current role, Pichai oversees product management, engineering and research for Google’s products and platforms, according to Google’s filing at the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
  • He has been SVP of Google Android, Chrome and Apps, working on consumer products used by millions of people.
  • Pichai was part of the team that launched the Chrome browser in 2008 and, prior to that, worked on various search products, including Google Toolbar, Desktop Search, Gadgets, and Google Gears and Gadgets, according to Business Insider magazine.

Intel India launches 'Ek Kadam Unnati Ki Aur' for rural digitisation



Intel India has rolled out its programme on digitisation of rural India - called "Ek Kadam Unnati Ki Aur" - from Telangana. It is an initiative aimed at working with the government to create the blueprint for the digitisation of rural India.


The first such Digital India 'Unnati' Kendra has been set up at a Common Services Center (CSC) in Nadimpalle village of Mahabubnagar district of Telangana and will be used to create the framework for the Telangana Model Digital Village.


It will also provide various citizen services under the Telangana government's e-panchayat programme, the centre will provide devices, relevant local content and training for citizens thereby creating opportunities for development and empowerment. Intel has roped in Micromax, HP, Snapdeal and Shweta Computers and Peripherals as partners for the initiative.

Vijay Keshav Gokhale appointed as India’s ambassador to China

Senior diplomat Vijay Keshav Gokhale who is currently the country's Ambassador to Germany, has been appointed as the Ambassador to China. He will replace Ashok Kantha, whose term will end in early January.

Gokhale is a 1981 batch IFS officer, before taking up position in Germany as India’s top envoy, he has served in Indian missions in Hong Kong, Hanoi, Beijing and New York.

In the Ministry of  External Affairs headquarters, Mr. Gokhale has also held the posts of director (China and East Asia) and then Joint Secretary (East Asia) and is known to be one of the most knowledgeable officials, who is well-versed with China affairs.


Syed Akbaruddin India’s next permanent representative to UN

Senior diplomat and former high-profile spokesperson of the external affairs ministry Syed Akbaruddin has been appointed as India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, succeeding Asoke Mukerji who will be retiring. 

As India’s Permanent Representative to the global body in New York, Mr. Akbaruddin’s main task would be to push for India’s bid to gain permanent membership of the UN Security Council as well as to strongly advocate its position on key issues.
About Syed Akbaruddin :-

He is a 1985 batch IFS officer, and currently serving as an Additional Secretary in MEA. He had also brought an effective mix of social and digital media into the External Publicity division.

Mr. Akbaruddin was Chief Coordinator of the recently-held Indo-Africa Summit here which was participated by heads of state and government of 41 countries from African continent. The event went off smoothly with all visiting dignitaries praising the way it was organised.

He had served at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Geneva and is considered an “expert” on the West Asia where he had served in various capacities.

Aimed at lowering treatment cost of cancer and cardio-vascular diseases that are on the rise in India, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda launched the country’s first Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment (AMRIT) programme, outlet at AIIMS in New Delhi to sell drugs at highly discounted rates.

202 drugs for cancer and cardio-vascular diseases has been identified whose price is going to be reduced on an average by 60 to 90 per cent. Under the programme, 148 cardiac implants will be given from the centre and sold here and their cost will be reduced by 50 to 60 per cent.

The Government of India-owned HLL Lifecare Ltd. will establish and run AMRIT pharmacy, which will sell both drugs and implants at significant discount on market rates, based on authentic prescriptions from doctors to patients not only from AIIMS but other hospitals also. This is a pilot project which will be reviewed after 15 days than if found suitable it will be replicated in all govt.  hospitals

Ace Indian Shuttler Saina Nehwal won silver medal at 2015 China Open Superseries Premier Badminton tournament as she finished at second position in the Women’s Singles category.In the final match that was played at Haixia Olympic Sports Centre in Fuzhou, top seeded Saina Nehwal lost to sixth placed Xuerui Li from China by 12-21, 15-21 score. Saina and Li had met 12 times against each other but Saina has won just 2 of those games.With this victory Xuerui took home USD 52,500 for her title win while Saina, whose last victory against Xuerui came in 2012, was rewarded USD 26,600.
